This may be the most exciting episode since the series came back from its winter break.
While this episode follows the normal “Rizzoli and Isles” formula of having a case while dealing with their personal lives, this episode has a few extra kicks. Organic Chef Holden collapses in the street and dies. Holden is a reality TV show winner, who is now working with his fellow contestants. As Maura examines him, she gets a nose bleed and instructs everyone to get back and her partners to call a HazMat team.
As soon as the team gets back from a de-containment process, Maura receives an interesting package. She doesn’t remember ordering anything, so there’s immense panic when she picks it up and it clicks. They clear the building and have the bomb squad investigate. Frankie holds the alleged bomb and stays with Maura so she isn’t alone. The package turns out to be a backorder of coffee she ordered months prior. However, the intense situation turns on previously-harbored feelings inside Frankie.
Hope, Maura’s biological mother, decides it was time to make amends and approaches Jane about Maura. Jane does everything but tell her where to go because she hates her for how she treats Maura. In the end, Maura decides to give Hope a second chance because she’s her mother. I find it interesting that no matter the show, plot, or actors, in dealing with parent-child relationships, the child gives the parent another chance because at the end of the day, it’s their parent. What child doesn’t want to have a relationship with their parent?
As Jane and the other detectives work the case, they discover the runner-up from the reality show uses Chef Holden’s inability to smell against him and poisons him so he could have the rights to a secret sauce and become famous. Second place really is first looser, I guess.
I really like the pop this episode has and can’t wait to see how they’re going to end the season. There is only one episode left until the show breaks for the summer, so the season finale promises to change everything.
I’m watching, are you?
